China. Ogilvy’s ‘Social Media Equivalents’ in China 2011.

Ogilvy China has re-created the well-know Conversation Prism to show some of the Chinese local platforms thriving in place of major international equivalents. Practivally the diagram is actually as useless as the original Conversation Prism (‘Did anyone ever look at this diagram of 250 platforms to find the right one for his purpose?’) but it nevertheless gives you a good understanding of the vast Chinese digital landscape.

The Truth. Adland according to 4Chan.

My friend Johannes just shared this great, comprehensive overview of the (London) 4Chan perspective on agencies (by adland). Or to be more precise – if there was a perception of the ad world on 4Chan it would look a bit like the one below. What? No clue what 4Chan is? I think I know a couple of agencies to send your CV to…

Hot Wheels. Now that’s a Media Award.

Good idea, Ogilvy Mexico. The big boy looking down to the thousands of cars roaming Mexico City’s streets is a little bit scary. Nevertheless it’s just a perfect Media buy for Hot Wheels. No doubt, this is one, not mainstream applicable Award Idea. But I have to admit it’s a nice one. (via Ibelieveinadv)

Big Ideal. Ogilvy’s Brand Platform Revisited.

On my way to explore the best of both worlds (traditional vs digital) I have – once again – come across Ogilvy’s ‘Big Ideals’ concept. And I think it’s a philosophy worth taking a look at, if you’re a (non-Ogilvy) Planner.

It is a planning platform defining an overarching aspirational thought. The objective is obvious – to provide consistency in brand positioning and tone by defining what a brand strives for. Basically in how it wants to make the world a better place. This is a meta objective which is pretty free for all concepts and ideas supporting the Big Ideal. And indeed it may be even a good planning platform to build upon in a more stressful, social, 24/7 marketing environment. Simply because it is free, even though it stages a clearly defined, hypothetical, final condition for a brand.

Madmen. An interview with David Ogilvy.

I admit, this is a rather classic ad week. Apart from M&As such as the network I work for being bought by another network, and of course Friendfeed being eaten by Facebook there was not too much going on in the social web last week. So why not take the time to get back to the classics? David Ogilvy for example. One of the fathers of modern advertising and a Madman whose voice will stay relevant in this industry for ages to come. Watch this great interview with the master himself being interviewed by John Crichton in 1977.

The video was realized by the American Association of Advertising Agencies AAAA. Thank you.
