Back to the Future. The Apple Knowledge Navigator.

The following video was filmed in 1987 and stages a conceptual Apple design called the ‘Knowledge Navigator’. It is a concept described by former Apple Computer CEO John Sculley in his 1987 book, Odyssey. It describes a device that can access a large networked database of hypertext information, and use software agents to assist searching for information. Gesture control is included as well.

Apple produced several concept videos showcasing the idea. All of them featured a tablet style computer with numerous advanced capabilities. And I guess it reminds you of something. If you watch closely you will realize this video plays in the year 2010 or 2011…

Apple + T-Mobile. United in Impotence.

Dear Apple. Not ‘Antennagate’ is influencing my decision to buy an iPhone 4. Your inability to deliver does influence my decision. One day after the second launch wave hit Holland I tried to buy one in Amsterdam. Answer: I have to wait for at least 8-10 weeks. I mean WTF? We are talking about the day after the product launch. This is no intended artificial shortage – that is a disasterous launch for a product.

A week later I decided to really sign up for the waiting list via T-Mobile’s website in the Netherlands. I chose the desired model, click ‘bestellen’ (order) – and this is the result.

T-Mobile + Apple – wow, I am impressed. Well, in T-Mobile’s case I am at least happy they manage to keep up a consistent brand image no matter where you go.

Ooooh! Aaaaaah! 2010 is the year of the mobile, social, social CRM, IPTV App. No matter how realistic that is, check out this lovely piece of info visualization from the Fast company. Because according to Gartner an app explosion is underway. A developement which is closely intertwined with smartphone sales. Word up!

The unparalleled freedom of Web 2.0 can nowhere be witnessed as fully as in Apple’s App Store. Well, of course there is criteria to become part of this exclusive digital warehouse – clear, transparent criteria to leave no room for speculation how to get in there. And in order to stop everyone with bad or fake ideas to take advantage of them, Apple, and you, the user, Apple has now opened the doors to its App Store Rejection Department. Foursquare. Seven days in Frankfurt.

Today’s topic may not be completely new for my American readers but probably for some of those from Germany. On November 19th the third wave of cities for Foursquare has launched. Among them now my hometown Frankfurt in Germany as well as about 50 new cities worldwide. It’s been around in a lot of bigger cities for quite some time. In Germany it’s now live in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt. Zurich and Vienna are Foursquare cities in Switzerland and Austria.

So what is Foursquare? Basically it’s a local location based social network (I will use this word in the presence of my granny in the next couple of days). That means: You download a client to your iPhone or Android phone, connect with some friends and start your day in the city.

The big difference to…let’s say Facebook…is, it only works in specific cities (well…yet) and it’s all about exploring and recommending locations and events. Let’s say for example, you know this fantastic little bar around the corner and you think the White Russian there deserves a little more attention – then you simply locate your favourite nightly hangout via GPS (or start a new venue) and leave a shout to all other Foursquare users in the area to make them try the White Russian here.

NikeID for iPhone. Inspiration is everywhere.

It’s the second time in 3 weeks that I write about Nike. After having launched the soccer version of it’s Nike+ concept they have now equipped their incredibely useful, inspiring NikeID store with an iPhone app. And this app belongs to the one of the better brand-sponsored pieces of iPhone software I have seen in a while. The app says ‘Inspiration is everywhere’. And that’s why it comes with cool new features such as this: How about taking a photo and receiving a sneaker recommendation defined by the image’s color code? Or taking an in-depth look on the sneakers of your choice, making them rotate all with your fingertips?

Wohoo, Verizon!!! Way to go. Obviously all phone brands whose name is not Apple recently found their surprise love to the open Android OS. Verizon and Motorola have launched this campaign called androiddoes. And here is the TV commercial attached to it: Pretty cool and very aggressive (thx to illegaladvertising) .

Adobe. Photoshop on the iPhone…and you wonder.

Adobe has just launched its Photoshop app. Yes, we are talking about the world’s most successful piece of software for designers now brought to the screens of an iPhone. Actually I expected Adobe to push Flash a little bit further than what they announced last week, instead of bringing this complex, visual monster to the iPhone. But hey, life is sometimes stranger than fiction.

The concept is around for quite some time. Photoshop for iPhone was announced (and laughed about) in 2007 at Adobe’s keynote. And I simply had to repost this hilarious little spoof making John Loiacono, SVP of Adobe Creative Solutions Business Unit, announce the app at the keyote for Photoshop World in Las Vegas. Simply a good LOL about a decision you don’t need to understand.

Google Wave for iPhone. Probably…really…kind of…the next big thing.

Every other week there is one ‘next big thing’. In fact, I believe google Wave will be it. A couple of weeks ago (simultaneously to the rollout of Bing) this video appeared announcing Wave as google’s next Gen communication platform, combining fuctions of IM, twitter, Wikis, Social Networks in one real time app. The list of functions looks pretty stunning. But now the guys of thenextweb have gotten their hands on the first prototype of a mobile google Wave version using the stunning HTML5 functionalities built into the iPhone’s Safari Browser.

Watch and be amazed.
