So yesterday was an interesting but less than pleasant day. I cannot go too much into detail here. But generally, dear grown up, mature consumer think about one thing: You may interact with companies and some of them may make mistakes. But generally most companies in the 21st century who interact with you as players in the social web are pretty cool. Most of them have done their homework. And most of them care.

So think twice before you troll. It might be you who is the huge dick. Not the brand you ‘like’.

About two weeks after <del datetime="2011-06-27T19:24:09+00:00">the world almost ended</del> Inside Facebook reported about a <del datetime="2011-06-27T19:24:09+00:00">couple of people enjoying summertime instead of staring at their computer monitors 24/7</del> traffic drop on Facebook the opposite seems to be true. Facebook in fact eats the Internet.

Ben Ellowitz, Founder and SEO of Wetpaint writes:

When you exclude just Facebook from the rest of the Web, consumption in terms of minutes of use shrank by nearly nine percent between March 2010 and March 2011, according to data from comScore. And, even when you include Facebook usage, total non-mobile Internet consumption still dropped three percent over the same period.

Technically he separates between two different webs: The dominating Facebook-driven web and the web of documents. And the web of documents is under sever pressure. “The illusion of the growth of the internet is just that – a mirage caused by Facebook posting 69% growth over the last year.” (We are Social). Ellowitz’ conclusion: future companies will need to spend less time on SEO, and more time on optimizing for Facebook – the web inside the web.

Read the full article here. I don’t think Facebook can replace the document web. But to be honest, I don’t want to find out. It seems we are currently handing over the greatest invention of mankind to Goldman Sachs and Mister Zuckerberg. Doesn’t feel right.

McCann has just launched its Wave 5 study. I am a fan of the Wave episodes for years now. They are the largest and longest running dedicated social media study worldwide – this time with 54 countries and 37,600 survey respondents. Wave grows largeer from year to year. And it is now one of the few really global reports that help to understand the new social paradigm worldwide. By the way, I was extremely surprised when I got to know the person who was in charge of Wave 1-4 who is now running his own global data gathering platform, trendstream. Yes, I’m a Nerd Groupie.

We keep on blaming colleagues, clients and the universe itself who prevent us from getting to a great concept. But I agree with Leon and Daniel from Jung von Matt Stockholm – a truly great idea still consists of this very unique blend of new thinking, problem solving capabilities and quite often simple fun. It’s only a matter of definition what we consider as entertainment, new thinking and problem solving capabilities… (via the Planning Lab)

Here we go again with a chart. But a good one.

You know the rules – you are sitting in a meeting with a bunch of other marketing blokes (and possibly the client) and all of you pretend the pork meat/washing powder/light bulb/whatever thay you are trying to sell is interesting in regards to the campaign/viral superhit/Facebook page you want to come up with. Bad news, it almost never is.

Just in case any of your colleagues starts to promote his fantastic idea to engage urban hipsters to record this video and upload it to your light bulb website using an Augmented Reality app, simply point to the chart below. It actually says one thing – few people are really interested in marketing. Well…almost no one. Some of your target group might really be deep into sneakers. But honestly…almost no one will become a fan of the sausage you are trying to sell – except if you have a really great idea or bribe them. Your choice.

This simple truth is closely related to this ‘letter to all of advertising and marketing.’ Genius that is. And as I just found out, it both comes from a London-based agency called SellSell. I like them.
