IKEA. Do You Need a Hand?

There are ads and then there are ads. The clever, simple and intriguing idea below does three things at once (which is not common for German creation anymore): It describes a problem, it solves it using the brand’s means and it’s not just award-focused Zombie creation. High five Grabarz & Partner. I love it.

How True. It’s not about Digital, Stupid.

I found this convincing mission statement by Sidekick Studios UK on Neil Perkin’s (fantastic) blog. It’s just a well written piece of PR for a digital conference in the first place. But it is so right.

Chat Roulette. If you turn your head I win.

Social Networks. Age is definitely more than just a number.

First of all follow Pingdom on twitter. Seriously.

Secondly, it is not common for me to quote the research results of one thinktank for the second time in two days. Here I will make an exception. Simply because Pingdom respects the golden rule of being quoted on the social webs in perfect harmony with the four key elements of social nerd buzz:

  • do the research/poll/well argumented guess about Planet Earth
  • follow up with number crunching (if there are numbers)
  • draw a great looking diagram
  • tweet the hell out of it

Today we talk about age distribution and social networks. It’s neither a secret nor surprising that there is an age gap between LinkedIn and Twitter. But as long as you don’t nail down this fact into a diagram you don’t make a point on the intertubes. Right? Right.

Here we go…

Fact: Age distribution in social networks varies among social networks

High five! We are number one. If you are a 36 year old tech savvy, male, digital nerd the following diagram enlightens you with one key information – you will meet the ones you like (and who are like you) over and over again. Your mom probably isn’t yet a registered member of Facebook and your teenage cousin probably isn’t as well. But be prepared for the next generation to be 150% part of the game. Unfortunately they are not really relevant yet marketing wise (but they will follow….muahahahahahahahahahahahaha).

Facts and Figures. The world of google.

Twitter is crowded with marketing people. And what do marketing people really, really like? Right, statistics. Among loads of animated short movies which stage facts & figures from the web, we have seen a lot of wallpaper-like statistical info visualizations lately lately. First I thought “Nice”, until I found out that pretty much everyone nowadays puts his facts and figures into these kinds of banners. Anyway, I think this visualization is one of the better ones. It was created by Pingdom and tries to integrate many interesting facts about google in one place. Interesting!

Flyfire. The next beautiful and probably extremely annoying Media Idea.

If there is one thing I am pretty sure of then it’s a future stuffed with ads of all kinds at places you would not even think about nowadays. One aspect of it will be based on anything even losely connected to Augmented Reality. Stuff like Layar will finally enable us to wallpaper every freakin’ inch of this planet with virtual billboards. The second way to Open-Space-Advertising could be kicked of by this concept called Firefly. Firefly Flyfire. Flyfire makes little helicopter-like machines fly in formations which can be used to stage 3D information. Thank you M.I.T. for a future that might look great but might well be pretty annoying (via Bewegungsmelder).

Wired. Ready to go iPad.

Wired Magazine has just launched its video preview for its iPad application. And yes it looks yummy! In fact it is very logical for Wired to be among the first to take this step. I think the iPad will be a piece of hardware to make print publisher’s wet dreams come true and offer a digital platform to buy and consume print media.

As a commenter explained: This visual demo is very likely an Adobe Air demo…which does not work on the iPad yet.

Agency Strike. Belgian Agencies show the Finger.

Basically it’s an update to my post from yesterday which reacts on Bud’s article about the future of agencies. Today the agencies of Belgium went on strike to protest against the erosion of pitch norms. They synchronized their websites to display one message which you can click through one after another and jump from website to website – an impressive act of resistance against what seems to be the sad truth in the industry nowadays.

I have posted the screenshots of all 14 pages below. The virtual strike will only last for a week.

adidas. Preparing the Social Push for NBA All–Star Weekend.

For about three years I worked on various adidas accounts here at my employer, Neue Digitale / Razorfish. That’s why I’m pretty interested to watch what the brand is up to when it comes to new digital (mainly social) concepts. In fact, the days of big digital presentations are over are getting reinterpreted at adidas HQ, Amsterdam.

On NBA’s All-Star Weekend Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard takes the lead in a push by 180/TBWA Riot and adidas to socialize….umm…..big shiny ad productions. They will air a 30-second spot starring the basketball god which unlocks more Howard-related content the more it is shared. Additionally it will be intertwined with the website and a Youtube channel.

Charlie Brooker. Your Own News Report Template in a Nutshell.

Oh, and as I was in the process to write about cynical DIY ways to create your own PR drama, here is a brilliant analogy – creating your own dramatic news flick out of nothing. Or to be more precise, creating something which looks like news but is just a format. The Guardian’s Charlie Brooker demonstrates a literal version of any piece of outdoor news report on TV nowadays. It looks serious. And by god, it is (via brandflakesforbreakfast).
