Whoa! How Shit Infographics Explain the World (the wrong Way).

So Mashable again explains us the world through an info graphic wallpaper. And every self-proclaimed social media expert retweets it. Usually this is just boring. Sometimes dangerously misleading and pretty embarassing. Such as this time.

Latest example of such pure and utter shit: A ‘study’ (actually a joke) that was published as an infographic on mashable, retweeted today by thousands of Lemmings who only seem to be interested to share the next bullshit-infographic as quickly as possible.

The claim sounds credible: “78% of burglars use Facebook, twitter, or Foursquare to target potential properties.”

Whoa! That’s a lot, isn’t it? And it sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? After all the gods punish those freaks who keep on checking in to any location they enter. If only it would not be all so wrong and only if this handy info graphic wouldn’t be a big PR stunt that everyone keeps on retweeting.

The mashable article features the notorious info graphic by Credit Sesame, “a personal finance tool” claiming that 78% of all burglars use social media to gather intelligence about their next victim
If you browse the article on Credit Sesame you will find out that the “study” was not at all conducted by Credit Sesame: they apparently just built an easy-to-consume info graphic. The actual “study” was conducted by UK’s security company Friedland: yes, a company that earns money with your fear of burglars.
If you read the original “study” you stumble upon the following text: “An overwhelming 78% of ex-burglars interviewed said that they strongly believed social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Four Square are being used by current thieves when targeting properties.”

Mobile Campaigning. Sweden’s Safest Hands.

Ah nice! My colleague Oskar shared this link of one of his favorite campaigns right now: Sweden’s Safest Hands – a vert smart Mobile competition by the Swedish Post.

Actually it’s a type of campaign we have seen before. But the time-relevance and the densitiy of post offices makes this one extremely cool. Oh…and the app looks pretty nice as well. I can imagine this really works for the Swedish Post. Great idea.

Yiibu is a small office in Edinburgh specialized in Mobile marketing. And they spent quite some time to think about more efficient processes in creating mobile apps – particularly in replacing native with web apps.

If there is such a thing as a superhit on Slideshare their first presentation Rethinking the Mobile Web comes pretty close to it. And the deck embedded below is again a strong statement for web apps.

It is long but very smart.

It is just a bit more than a year that Chris Anderson on Wired claimed that the future will be “driven primarily by the rise of the iPhone model of mobile computing, and it’s a world Google can’t crawl, one where HTML doesn’t rule.”

I guess this one time he was wrong.

Genius. Diesel launches Excelbook.

I just stumbled upon this wonderful concept gem: the Diesel Excelbook. Even though its branding value as an application is close to zero it is just one more amendment to the great platform that Diesel created with its Be Stupid philosophy. Simple, fun, stupid…well done Diesel. Check out the video…it is pretty selfexplanatory.

Imagine you get hit by this bus tomorrow on your way to work. Probably the last thing that comes to your mind is what happens to your social network connections. Anyway most platforms have clear rules on how to deal with your LOLCat pictures after you have deceased. And your Death 2.0 is alternatively very actively manageable through a bunch of other tools.

But now we have the one thing we very looking for for so long. If I Die is a Facebook application that allows afterlife Facebook status updates. You just leave behind your last message on Facebook, name three friends…and tell your loved ones what you really think of them.

A new Hotspot. Amsterdam wants to become Appsterdam.

About a month ago I praised the qualities of Amsterdam in an article I wrote for the German ad magazine Page. One thing that struck me in this city is the level of innovation here as well as the city’s clear objective to support new industries and get them to Amsterdam. I have never met anyone from Amsterdam’s city council but in contradiction to many other cities there seems to be a clear vision here on how to shape Holland’s capitol from both, a cultural AND economical perspective. That’s why Amsterdam is also hometown to some of the most creative agencies in the world – the city father simply subsidize taxation here to relocate the right blend of industries on the rivers of the Amstel.

I wasn’t really suprised when I read Mike Lee’s open letter on mur.mu.rs. It’s a call for conquest. And appeal for app developers to settle over to Amsterdam and to rebrand it as Appsterdam. Funny to read because it really reads like a letter from the colonies but at the same time strong and intelligent.

I have traveled the world looking for the most livable city on earth, a place with the ideal balance of quality and price, history and vibrance, culture and innovation. That place is Amsterdam. (…)

The success of Apple’s platforms has been in no small part due to its unique developer community. Our community is unique not just in technology, but in business. (…) We cooperate, because we are friends. If one of us does something to piss the other off, we don’t call out the lawyers, we call up our friend, and talk it over like people. We don’t just attend conferences, we get together at conferences, go out together, and have a good enough time together to generate blackmail material sufficient to nip litigation in the bud.

Mike’s point – a new industry needs a friendly hospitable place that invites them to work together and to exchange ideas. And his call to app developers all over the world to relocate to Amsterdam isn’t just an abstract one…

Hyper Island. There is an Intern for That.

Oh boy. I am so happy that I am not 20 year old creative. Otherwise I would get pretty quickly pretty frustrated by the competition of Hyper Islanders. The Swedish school Hyper Island offers one of the best learning experience for young digital people worldwide right at the moment. It pretty much goes like this: West Point – authority + digital + American Apparel = Hyper Island.

And yes, the school ‘produces’ not just some of the most brilliant young creative, developers and project guys I ever worked with – it also forms a very strong network for its students and ex students. Check out one of their latest ideas, the Hyper Island Intern Store created by some of their students. It hasn’t yet launched but it looks pretty promising, doesn’t it?

Just a quick personal update – Page Online, one of Germany’s leading design magazines put my supersized head on the frontpage today (which is a little bit creepy). I was asked to recommend my favourite application. And I think it is twittertim.es as it gives me a very handy overview of what’s hot among my followers. Ooooh! Aaaaaah! 2010 is the year of the mobile, social, social CRM, IPTV App. No matter how realistic that is, check out this lovely piece of info visualization from the Fast company. Because according to Gartner an app explosion is underway. A developement which is closely intertwined with smartphone sales. Word up!

Apple. Inside the App Store’s Rejection Department.

The unparalleled freedom of Web 2.0 can nowhere be witnessed as fully as in Apple’s App Store. Well, of course there is criteria to become part of this exclusive digital warehouse – clear, transparent criteria to leave no room for speculation how to get in there. And in order to stop everyone with bad or fake ideas to take advantage of them, Apple, and you, the user, Apple has now opened the doors to its App Store Rejection Department.
