Fantastic commercial, Chevy. With 5 minutes it is a bit too long to enthuse everyone. But dear Chevrolet: Do yourself a favour and turn your boring Youtube channel into a hub for your consumer’s childhood memories. That’s a great story. And even though I as a European have no personal memories of Chevy – I guess a lot of Americans do.

Last night I attended Amsterdam’s Pechakucha Night at Roest. Most of you probably know the concept: Random people present their business concept/idea/art theory/whatever on 20 slides and they only have 20 seconds for each page before a heartless Powerpoint algorithm switches to the next one. The one person that definitely stood out for me was Olivier Otten – a young Dutch Creative/Developer who tries to play with very playful ways to interact with video under the name Selfcontrolfreak.

I don’t want to say much more. Just one thing. Gamification is not about badges and check-ins. Traditional playful, interactive metaphors have been around since the 1990s. But even two decades later I know of few platforms which are as much fun as this one.

I just stumbled upon this perfect example of a great copy text. After years of working as a copywriter (in my previous life) I still have a lot of respect for the few who are able to write such an intelligent, bold, entertaining text. A no-bullshit text that positions this ice cream as the fat, unhealthy, very delicious product that it is. Well done! Congratulations Wisconsin for this ice cream and congratulations for the copywriter (who was probably the van owner).

Winnebago Man. A Documentary about the other Side of Virality.

I don’t usually recommend films on davaidavai. Today I make an exception. A couple of weeks ago I read about a documentary that tried to understand the background of one of my most favorite Memes ever: The Winnebago Man.

Most of you will know him. The ‘Winnebago Man’ is almost a relic from the Dinosaur age of viral entertainment. Back in 1989 Winnebago Industries hired the man below to promote their motorized homes in a number of videos. But Jack Rebney was a grumpy man and the actual shooting day was hot, unpleasant and dominated by flies. Cursing is what followed.

And his team filmed it and edited his swearing.

So a couple of team members took copies of these outtakes and passed it on and on and on. Voila – a viral hit was born (on videocassettes!!!).

The documentary ‘Winnebago Man’ starts more than 20 years later. Director by Ben Steinbauer’s self-imposed mission: To find the man behind the video. And to tell his story as ‘the angriest man alive’.

Case Study. ROM – Patriotism won’t feed you.

I am really not well known for being a big fan of the Cannes Awards (or any other Award show). But every year I realize there still sometimes beats an ad guy’s heart in me. I just saw the ROM case study for the first time. It has won the Grand Prix for best Promo and Activation. And as far as I can see it is neither stupid nor strategically wrong. I like it.

Even though its branding value as an application is close to zero it is just one more amendment to the great platform that Diesel created with its Be Stupid philosophy. I am not entirely sure how I should feel about a chocolate-flavored stout. But at least it’s a novelty – both as a product as well as an interactive experience. Portugese brewer Sagres has just launched a website made of real chocolate to promote its new “Sagres preta chocolate”. To make the interactive experience become as choco as possible the whole website was designed and sculptured by chocolatier Victor Nunes before it was photographed to become components for the online venue. I guess the following film tells one of the smartest stories in a music videos that I have seen so far. It was created by the ‘world’s best neo-post-post-music hall anti-folk band’ Pig with the Face of a Boy and it stages the story of Russia from the perspective of a worker…well…who is responsible to spin the Tetris blocks that fall down from the sky. A great metaphor to describe life in Russia since the 1870s and a very nice, clever song. Well done guys. I hope you become really, really successful. Check out the band here…
